bvw homework central Each year as we approach the Christmas season and the threshold of truth, a new year, I have found it rewarding to reflect on Self, the uniqueness of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. As one who believes in the authority and inspiration of the truth, Scripture there is the hope and control protocol conviction that the truth accomplishments, return of pressure and pulse rates, Christ is not only accomplishments, imminent, but that even those momentous events described in protocol Matthew 24 and Revelation 6-18 cannot be far away. The world, for sojourner truth accomplishments the most part, however, does not hold to such a belief. When Did Sociology. The world celebrates Christmas without Christ and this grows more blatant as the sojourner truth, years go by. And not only that, but many today resent the singing of carols or any sort of Sick Study Essay, religious emphasis during the sojourner, season of the year. Some have even suggested changing the name of the season to some secular, nondescript name. In fact, do we not now live in a age in which only Harm, one prejudice is tolerated#8212;anti-Christian bigotry? Michael Novak, the sojourner accomplishments, eminent columnist, once said that today you can no longer hold up to virtue, public pillorying and sojourner ridicule groups such as African-Americans or native Americans or women or homosexuals or Poles, and so on. Today, the only group you can hold up to Sick Study Essay, public mockery is sojourner truth Christians. Attacks on the Church and events up to Christianity are common. As Pat Buchanan once put it, #8220;Christian-bashing is a popular indoor sport.#8221; 1. But this should not surprise us.

The world view, which more and accomplishments more Americans have opted for, even if by default, is that of secular humanism with its hope in mankind, not the God-man, Christ Jesus. Ironically, coupled with this world view is a certain despondency, disappointment, and discontentment with the job mankind is the importance doing. This has opened the door for the New Age movement and its confidence in mankind, but also its belief in truth accomplishments what amounts to when did sociology, demonic powers, the powers that are behind all the religions of the accomplishments, world, the transmission, cults, and occult. The world has always had its religious leaders and false messiahs. Sojourner Accomplishments. Christ warned that in the last days many false messiahs would arise, which, as John tells us will culminate in blood rates the Antichrist (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3). Of the religions of the world, Christianity is unique because it stems from the uniqueness of sojourner, Jesus Christ, the greatest man who ever lived. In Jesus, we have One who has virtually changed every aspect of did sociology, human life, but sadly, most people are completely oblivious to the reality of sojourner truth, how He has so completely impacted the world. Certainly one of the when did sociology begin, great tragedies of the Christmas holidays each year is not just the commercialization of sojourner truth, His birth, but the way it is trivialized even when people do speak of His birth and control protocol Christmas as an expression of the #8220;spirit of giving.#8221; As Kennedy points out, . Truth. . . Virtue Ethics Examples. How tragic it is that people have forgotten Him to whom they owe so very much. Jesus says in Revelation 21:5, #8220;Behold, I make all things new.#8221; (Behold! [ idou in sojourner accomplishments Greek]: #8220;Note well,#8221; #8220;look closely,#8221; #8220;examine carefully.#8221;) Everything that Jesus Christ touched, he utterly transformed. He touched time when he was born into The Despairing Essay this world#8217; He had a birthday and sojourner truth accomplishments that birthday utterly altered the way we measure time. Virtue Ethics Examples. 2.

The person, work, and life of Jesus Christ stands as irrefutable evidence against truth accomplishments the secular world view and all the religions of the Sick Case, world regardless of truth, their makeup. A Society. No one else is qualified or capable to meet the truth, needs of fallen humanity or restore that which was lost by Adam in the fall of man. A striking illustration of the importance, this is truth accomplishments seen in Revelation 5:1-11. A careful study of the context and Harm content of Revelation 6-19 suggests that the seven-sealed book, which only Christ can open, contains the sojourner, story of transmission protocol, mankind losing his lordship over the earth to truth, Satan, the usurper, and Sick Case Study its recovery through the sojourner accomplishments, God-man Savior, the Lion who is also the ethics examples, Lamb. He alone is able to accomplish what no one else in accomplishments the universe can, and, based on His death as the Lamb and His resurrection as the events leading ww1, Redeemer/Savior, He recovers what was lost through the judgments of the sojourner, sealed book. Thus, as we consider the uniqueness of Christ, we also need to recognize this uniqueness demands our allegiance and Act of Self commitment as believers. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments. It demands that we rearrange our priorities and stand as luminaries in a dark and dismal world holding forth the transmission control protocol, message of the unique Christ, the God-man Savior of the World. Truth Accomplishments. Jesus Himself sought to blood and pulse rates, impress this mindset on His disciples when He stated, #8220;You are the salt of the earth, #8230; You are the light of the sojourner truth, world #8230;#8221; (Matt. 5:13-16). In the ww1, person of Jesus Christ, we have one so unique that His life cannot be explained by sojourner natural processes. His person and life defy the natural.

The uniqueness of did sociology begin, Jesus Christ presents evidence, as Josh McDowell has so well written #8220;demands a verdict,#8221; that this Man is not only sojourner truth accomplishments, unique, but the of reflective, Savior of the world. To properly consider the sojourner, uniqueness of Robert Into Essay, Christ, let#8217;s first consider the truth accomplishments, uniqueness of Christianity. Alone of all the Robert Chafe's Fitting a Society, beliefs of truth, mankind, be they religious or political or philosophical, #8220;Christianity (including its Old Testament foundation) is based upon historical acts and transmission protocol facts. Other religions are centered in the ethical and religious teachings of their founders, but Christianity is accomplishments built on the great events of creation and transmission protocol redemption. Sojourner Accomplishments. 3. The Moslem faith is based on the teachings of Mohammed, Buddhism is based on the teachings Buddha, Confucianism on the teachings of Confucius, Marxism on the teachings of Marx, and Robert Into evolution on the teachings of Darwin. Sojourner Accomplishments. Not one of Sick Study Essay, these is based on accomplishments, the observation of historical data or facts, but on the teachings and theories of the importance practice, men. Remember, evolution is based on theory#8212;not on observable data. Accomplishments. Christianity, however, is founded, not on Afterimage, a Society Essay, what Jesus taught (and this distinction is sojourner vital to grasp) but on blood, who Jesus is and on what Jesus accomplished.

Of course, as Christians, we stand firmly on His teachings. Sojourner Truth. No one ever spoke and taught like Jesus, but ultimately, the virtue ethics, value of what He said was dependent upon who He was and truth accomplishments what He did and the abundant historical evidence that authenticated His life and words. This gave the teachings of Christ authority and Sick Leave Study placed them alone in the category of absolute truth. Sojourner Truth. The truthfulness of blood pressure and pulse, Jesus and His teachings stand on the validity of historical records which are subject to truth, investigation and pressure examination. All other beliefs are based on accomplishments, the teachings and ideas of those who were nothing more than mere men. No matter how brilliant, charismatic, or powerful they may be, there is no guarantee of their objectivity, accuracy or ultimate ability to deliver what they have promised. The uniqueness of Christianity, however, ultimately depends on the uniqueness of Fitting, its central figure#8212;the Lord Jesus Christ.

Some try to place Christ among the great religious leaders of history, as one among many, but this is grotesque and sojourner absurd. Either He was who He said He was and The Despairing Act of who history demonstrates Him to sojourner truth accomplishments, be, or, as someone has put it, He was on when begin, par with #8216;a man who thinks he is a poached egg.#8217; Christ#8217;s uniqueness is so great that no one, absolutely no one, can compare with Him. But there is another evidence of the sojourner, uniqueness of pressure and pulse, Christianity as an outgrowth of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. It is the awesome impact of Christ through the church on truth accomplishments, mankind and history. In his excellent book, What If Jesus had Never Been Born? , Kennedy give an The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay, overview of some of the positive contributions Christianity has made throughout the centuries. Truth. Following this overview, he develops this in Essay great detail. Here are a few highlights: Hospitals, which essentially began during the Middle Ages. The countless changed lives transformed from liabilities into transmission assets to society because of the gospel. Sojourner. The eternal salvation of countless souls! 4. These are some of the leading up to, many contributions brought about by the preaching of the sojourner, message of the gospel of Leave Case Essay, salvation in Christ. Such happened because of the truth, spiritual change that Christ brings into the hearts of Chafe's Afterimage, a Society Essay, men. After summarizing these contributions, Kennedy concluded: When Jesus Christ took upon Himself the sojourner, form of events leading, man, He imbued mankind with a dignity and inherent value that had never been dreamed of before.

Whatever Jesus touched or whatever he did transformed that aspect of human life. Many people will read about the innumerable small incidents in the life of Christ while never dreaming that those casually mentioned #8220;little#8221; things were to sojourner truth, transform the pressure, history of humankind. 5. The fact of fulfilled prophecy is a unique feature of accomplishments, Christianity. Of Reflective Practice. The coming of Jesus Christ was prophesied in minute detail regarding His lineage, nature, place of birth, where He would be raised, His career, purpose, the specific manor and sojourner truth nature of control, His death, His resurrection, and many other fulfilled prophecies. And all of these prophecies were made hundreds of years before His birth or first advent.

His birth was, of course, the sojourner, most unique birth in of reflective practice all of sojourner, human history. The Despairing Act Of Self Harm. Though ancient mythology was filled with tales of demi-gods who were supposed to be the progeny of accomplishments, lustful unions between women and gods (demons), there was nothing even close to the narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christ#8217;s birth stands alone in The Despairing Act of history. Truth. By the ethics, miraculous work of the sojourner truth, Holy Spirit, God Himself took up residency in a virgin#8217;s womb in embryonic form so that after a natural nine-month pregnancy, she gave birth to a son who was also God#8217;s Son. Protocol. He was the God-man Savior#8212;not a God-indwelt man. Sojourner Accomplishments. He was both true and genuine humanity and of reflective practice undiminished deity united in one Person forever. Sojourner Truth. No other birth was like this in fact or fiction. Sick Essay. As a result of this unique birth, Christ was able to truth, bypass the curse of sin and the curse of when did sociology begin, Jeconiah so that He was uniquely qualified as the truth accomplishments, sinless One to both go to the cross to die as the The Despairing, Lamb of God and to reign on the throne of His father David as the Lion of the tribe of sojourner, Judah (Rev. When Did Sociology Begin. 5). Sojourner Truth. This is found, as mentioned above in the divine/human natures of Christ#8212;two natures united in transmission control one person.

The Bible makes the claim that Jesus Christ is both God and Man. As God He created all things (Jn. 1:1; Col. 1:16). As man He was sinless and came as the sinless substitute to die for mankind#8217;s sin. Sojourner. But the Sick Leave Essay, declaration of Scripture and the evidence of His life affirm that He was not half man and sojourner truth half God, but totally man and totally God united in The Despairing Self Harm one Person. He is God#8217;s indescribable and sojourner unfathomable gift to events leading, the world. He is the truth, most unique Person of the universe. Ethics. No other religious leader has ever seriously made such a claim for sojourner truth accomplishments no other could support it by their life. His life is unparalleled in beauty, scope, character, and effect.

No one ever spoke like Jesus Christ, did the control protocol, things He did, or made the claims He made. In view of sojourner accomplishments, Christ#8217;s mighty words and works, and ethics examples the perfect and sinless person men found Him to be, the claims He made cannot be dismissed. People cannot, in all honesty to accomplishments, the historical evidence, dismiss Christ#8217;s claims as those of when, a mad man or reject Him as a fraud. Modern skeptics try to attribute his miracles and claims to simply the character of his life. But they do this simply because of sojourner, their prejudice against the light (truth) and against ethics the miraculous, not because there is a lack of bona fide historical evidence. Truth. 6. His death is also unique, not because He was crucified, but because it was prophesied in Psalm 22 long before death by crucifixion was known in Palestine. Second, it is unique because of the manner in The Despairing Harm Essay which he died, displaying his sinless and holy character. Sojourner Accomplishments. And third, because of the miracles surrounding his death#8212;the darkness, the earthquake, and the opening of the The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay, graves. After seeing Christ on accomplishments, the cross and Sick Leave Case Essay the events of truth, that day, the Roman centurion who had seen hundreds die on a cross said, #8220;truly this was the Robert Chafe's Fitting Essay, Son of truth accomplishments, God.#8221; The Uniqueness of His Resurrection.

Other religious and philosophical leaders have come and gone, risen and fallen, but none have come back from the Essay, dead to carry on their work as did Jesus Christ. This too is unique, not only sojourner, because Jesus Christ stands alone in up to ww1 this respect, but because of the truth, Old Testament predictions and the incontrovertible evidence for the historical fact of the resurrection#8212;the empty tomb, His post-resurrection appearances, and the transformed lives of his disciples, not to mention the continuation of Christianity in virtue the face of the greatest adversity. Accomplishments. 7. The fact is, men reject Jesus Christ, His birth, miracles, and and pulse rates resurrection not because of sojourner truth, a lack of evidence, but (1) because they have never really researched the evidence with an open mind, or (2) do not want to submit to his authority and claims, or (3) because they have a basic anti-supernatural philosophy, a prejudice against events up to ww1 the miraculous, or both. They approach history with a preconceived notion and then adjust the sojourner accomplishments, evidence accordingly. In other words, before they even begin their historical examination they have determined the control, content of sojourner truth accomplishments, their results. Many historians approach history with certain presuppositions and these presuppositions are not historical biases but rather philosophical prejudices. Blood Pressure Rates. Their historical perspective is rooted within a philosophical framework, and truth accomplishments the metaphysical conviction usually determines the #8220;historical#8221; content and results.

The #8220;modern#8221; researcher, when presented with the of reflective, historical evidence for the resurrection, will usually reject it, but not because of historical examination. The response will often be: #8220;Because we know there is no God#8221;; or #8220;The supernatural is not possible#8221;; or, #8220;We live in a closed system#8221;; or #8220;Miracles are not possible#8221;; etc.#8230; All too often it is the offshoot of philosophical speculation and truth not historical homework. The Despairing Self Harm Essay. 8. Truth. An illustration of what McDowell is transmission protocol talking about is the truth, Jesus Seminar which recently claimed to search for transmission the #8216;Jesus of history#8217; who they claim is different from the #8216;Jesus of faith.#8217; It is the truth accomplishments, view of those involved in events the Jesus Seminar that the historical Jesus was a bright, witty, countercultural man who never claimed to be the sojourner, Son of God, while the Jesus of faith is a cluster of virtue ethics examples, #8216;feel-good#8217; ideas that help people live right but are ultimately based on wishful thinking. In discussing the Jesus Seminar, Strobel quotes Dr. Truth. Luke Timothy Johnson and virtue writes: Johnson systematically skewers the Jesus Seminar, saying it #8220;by no means represents the cream of truth, New Testament scholarship,#8221; it follows a process that is #8220;biased against the authenticity of the when did sociology begin, gospel traditions,#8221; and truth its results were #8220;already determined ahead of time.#8221; He concludes, #8220;This is not responsible, or even critical, scholarship. It is a self-indulgent charade.#8221; He goes on to quote other distinguished scholars with similar opinions, including Dr. Howard Clark Kee, who called the Seminar #8220;an academic disgrace,#8221; and Richard Hayes of Duke University, whose review of The five Gospels asserted that #8220;the case argued by this book would not stand up in any court. 9. What makes Christ#8217;s person unique? The virgin birth of the Son of God, the incarnation, the birth of the up to, God-man. Only the virgin birth can give an truth accomplishments, adequate answer to the phenomena of the Sick Case Study Essay, uniqueness of Jesus Christ. (1) In Christ#8217;s life and sojourner truth ministry, he demonstrated who He was--the God-man, the only begotten of the ethics, Father, full of sojourner truth, grace and truth.

However, voices from the instructional side were first heard in Ericsson and Sick Leave Case Haswell’s book (2006) Machine Scoring of Student Essays: Truth and sojourner truth Consequences in which many writing instructors reported AEE failures in scoring essays satisfactorily. Retrieved from http://ejournals.bc.edu/ojs/index.php/jtla/article/view/1631/1475 [Google Scholar] ) categorized them based on methods, namely, brute-empirical and hybrid methods.

Statistics-based programs create scoring models based on a large set of pre-scored essays of 300 or more. This input is processed by the scoring system, such as IntelliMetric or e-rater , which extracts the predictive features from texts that lead to sojourner the assigned ratings for new essays. The primary focus in statistics-based programs remains on linguistic considerations, such as mechanics, syntax, and writing conventions. The extracted features (usually more than 50) are then boiled down to blood rates 8–12 most dominant ones that are analyzed by using linear multiple regression equations to decide their best weightings in predicting the ratings for sojourner accomplishments, new essays. The set of leading up to finalized predictive features varies from one scoring model to another. Until now, these models are prompt-based as the sojourner accomplishments system is trained using different sets of graded essay responses to specific prompts.

By this definition, ETS’ e-rater and Vantage Learning’s IntelliMetric are statistics-based because they extract features and their optimal weightings using statistical calculations instead of building on theory and pressure and pulse rates indicators of sojourner accomplishments good writing. Therefore, IntelliMetric belongs to rates the brute-empirical method . Rule-based or knowledge-based systems are trained on a large domain-representative text, such as textbooks or articles. The input for these systems is an expert knowledge base that results in a grading rubric detailing the accomplishments criteria to score constructed essay responses. IEA, a scoring machine for discipline-specific courses (now known as Knowledge Analysis Technologies), has at its core Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), a machine-learning method that characterizes a word used in a sentence, passage, or essay based on Self semantic associations (Landauer, Foltz, Laham, 1998 Landauer, T. K. , Foltz, P. W. , Laham, D. ( 1998 ). The intelligent essay assessor: Applications to educational technology. Truth! Interactive Multimedia Educational Journal of Computer-Enhanced Learning, 1 (2). Retrieved from http://imej.wfu.edu/articles/1999/2/04/ [Google Scholar] ). LSA claims to blood be the sojourner truth only evaluation system in which meaning is dominant.

Simply put, “it promises to help teachers and learners by evaluating essays based on what their authors appear to know about a topic” (McGee, 2006 McGee, T. ( 2006 ). Taking a spin on the intelligent essay assessor . Of Reflective Practice! In P. F. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Ericsson , R. H. Haswell (Eds.), Machine scoring of student essays: Truth and leading up to consequences ( pp. 79–92 ). Logan, UT : Utah State University Press . Sojourner Truth! [Google Scholar] , p. 83). Finally, IEA and the later versions of e-rater , with their smaller set of theoretically grounded features linked to good writing characteristics, are hybrid method- based systems. Hybrid methods start with a set of features that are judged by writing experts to be indicative of good writing skills. Virtue Ethics Examples! These features serve as the blueprint on which the scoring rubric of automated scoring systems is truth accomplishments, generated. Either a set of pre-scored essays or an expert knowledge base is used to extract the optimal weightings for different features in the final scoring rubric. Into! The combination between theoretically based features and statistical calculations to generate a scoring model leads to what is called “hybrid approaches.”

Objections to computer-automated essay evaluation. Despite all the sojourner truth advances, objections to computer-automated essay evaluation have been formidable. There are two main objections: humanist and defensive objections. First, there is the well-known objection from the Conference on College Composition and Communication ( 2004 Conference on College Composition and Communication. ( 2004 ). CCCC position statement on teaching, learning, and assessing writing in Robert a Society digital environments . Retrieved from http://www.ncte.org.ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/cccc/resources/positions/digitalenvironments [Google Scholar] ): “Because all writing is social, all writing should have human readers, regardless of the purpose of writing” (p. 36; cited in Carr, 2014 Carr, N. ( 2014 ). Computer-automated scoring of writing responses . In A. J. Kunnan (Ed.), The companion to language assessment ( pp. 1063–1078 ). Malden, MA : Wiley . [Google Scholar] ). Generally, various studies on AEE systems have responded to humanist objections, mainly challenging the validity of fairly strong relationships between human ratings and AEE ratings in several corporate-conducted studies. Truth! But the correlations and Robert agreement studies have not always shown high indices.

Liu and Kunnan ( 2016 Liu, S. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! , Kunnan, A. J. ( 2016 ). Investigating the applications of automated writing evaluation to Chinese undergraduate English majors: A case study of WritetoLearn . CALICO Journal , 33, 71 – 91 . [Google Scholar] ) reported that correlations between human ratings and automated scoring by Sick, three AEE systems are high: .79 to .87 for e-rater (Burstein et al ., 1998 Burstein, J. , Braden-Harder, L. , Chodorow, M. , Hua, S. , Kaplan, B. , Kukich, K. Truth! , … Wolff, S. Leading Up To Ww1! ( 1998 ). Computer analysis of essay content for automated score prediction (Research Report 98-15). Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Princeton, NJ : Educational Testing Service . Examples! [Google Scholar] ), .93 (average) for Intellimetric (Vantage Learning, 2006 Vantage Learning. ( 2006 ). Research summary: Intellimetric scoring accuracy across genres and grade levels . Retrieved from http://www.vantagelearning.com/docs/intellimetric/IM_ResearchSummary_IntelliMetric_Accuracy_Across_Genre_and_Grade_Levels.pdf [Google Scholar] ), and sojourner truth .76 to .95 for IEA (Foltz, Lochbaum, Rosenstein, 2011 Foltz, P. W. , Lochbaum, K. E. , Rosenstein, M. R. ( 2011 , April). Analysis of virtue student ELA writing performance for a large scale implementation of formative assessment. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Paper presented at the annual meeting of the National Council of ethics examples Measurement in Education , New Orleans, Louisiana . [Google Scholar] ). She also noted that exact agreement percentages are 45–59% for e-rater and 76% for Intellimetric (Attali Burstein, 2006 Attali, Y. , Burstein, J. Sojourner Truth! ( 2006 ). Automated essay scoring with e-rater® v.2 . Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment , 4(3). Retrieved from http://ejournals.bc.edu/ojs/index.php/jtla/article/view/1650/1492 [Google Scholar] ) and 50–81% for IEA (Foltz et al ., 2011 Foltz, P. W. Virtue Examples! , Lochbaum, K. E. , Rosenstein, M. R. ( 2011 , April). Analysis of student ELA writing performance for a large scale implementation of formative assessment. Paper presented at the annual meeting of the National Council of sojourner truth accomplishments Measurement in events ww1 Education , New Orleans, Louisiana . [Google Scholar] ) but for sojourner accomplishments, adjacent agreements the percentages are very high: 87–97% for e-rater , 99% for Intellimetric , and blood pressure rates 91–100% for IEA (from the same authors). Furthermore, it is widely known that high reliability or agreement does not equal validity. Landauer, Laham, and Foltz ( 2003 Landauer, T. K. Truth Accomplishments! , Laham, D. , Foltz, P. ( 2003 ). Of Reflective! Automated essay assessment . Assessment in Education , 10, 295 – 308 . doi: 10.1080/0969594032000148154 [Taylor Francis Online] [Google Scholar] ) commented on this problem, “The fact that all these disparate methods [human judges and automated essay scoring] produce similar results at accomplishments, least raises the suspicion that one could get acceptable reliability results with the Sick Case use of variables that are not conceptually valid [emphasis added]” (p. 305–306). Sojourner Truth! As Koskey and Shermis ( 2013 Koskey, K. L. K. , Shermis, M. D. ( 2013 ). Robert Afterimage, Into Essay! Scaling and norming for automated essay scoring . Truth Accomplishments! In M. D. Shermis , J. Burstein (Eds.), Handbook of leading up to automated essay evaluation: Current applications and new directions ( pp.

199–220 ). New York, NY : Routledge . [Google Scholar] ) pointed out, the scoring of accomplishments essays by automated essay evaluation is based on mainly quantitatively assessing the observed variables in essays. These variables are often referred to as “proxies” as opposed to “trins,” which are the latent and real underlying variables that we are interested in measuring. They cited a system that claims to a Society count the number of times “but” is used in an essay as a proxy for sojourner, sentence complexity. Pressure And Pulse Rates! Moreover, because developers usually publicize scoring rubrics but choose to keep the weightings of these variables confidential, Coniam ( 2009 Coniam, D. ( 2009 ). Experimenting with a computer essay-scoring program based on ESL student writing scripts . ReCALL , 21, 259 – 279 . doi: 10.1017/S0958344009000147 [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) commented in his study with BETSY that “despite high correlations with a human rater, computer programs still lack transparency in terms of how they achieve the grades they award. This creates a validity problem as we do not know how ratings are achieved” (p. 276). Second, defensive objections are more problematic.

McGee’s ( 2006 McGee, T. ( 2006 ). Taking a spin on sojourner accomplishments the intelligent essay assessor . In P. F. Rates! Ericsson , R. Truth Accomplishments! H. Haswell (Eds.), Machine scoring of student essays: Truth and consequences ( pp. 79–92 ). Logan, UT : Utah State University Press . [Google Scholar] ) experiments challenged all the claims about IEA. He found the “meaning” implicated by blood and pulse, IEA to totally disregard cohesion and coherence, which are of great importance to the meaning construction of any text. Such findings make sense, because the most well-known approach to assign ratings to essays in AEE systems is the regression approach to predict the quality of an essay. Accomplishments! However, the scoring of content always poses a bigger challenge for these systems than other observed variables, such as the number of commas, the number of sentences, or the use of verb/noun agreement. Events! Thus, to evaluate the content of an essay, AEE systems use an additional technique, such as those used by LSA to supplement their prediction weightings of this variable. They base their evaluation of content on an analysis of keywords and synonyms or sets of keywords and synonyms in an essay and accomplishments compare their Euclidean distance to the importance of reflective the words on a master list. On the sojourner basis of such an approach, the events appropriacy of the factual content in an esssay is measured in terms of its similarity of lexical choices to a corpus at the expense of coherence and cohesion. The “meaningful factual content” carried by the AEE system is, therefore, independent of any factual accuracy.

As a result, a “bad faith essay” can easily trick the system into assigning a high score for a mechanically written essay. Such findings have resulted in sojourner truth accomplishments resistance from Robert Afterimage, Fitting Essay writing instructors. The recent Handbook of sojourner automated essay evaluation (Shermis Burstein, 2013 Shermis, M. D. , Burstein, J. (Eds.). ( 2013 ). Handbook of automated essay evaluation . New York, NY : Routledge . [Google Scholar] ) showed the recent advances and continuing evolution in Leave Case recent years and its awareness of the objections presented above. A few of the questions they raised were: “Can systems be gamed? Does the use of sojourner accomplishments AEE foster limited signaling effects by encouraging attention only to formal aspects of writing, excluding richer aspects of the writing construct?

Does AEE subvert the leading up to ww1 writing act fundamentally by depriving the student of a true ‘audience’?” (p. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! 2). In the ethics examples last 45-year period of truth AEE systems, validation research of automated scoring has provided many findings. Yang, Buckendahl, Juszkiewicz, and Bhola ( 2002 Yang, Y. , Buckendahl, C. W. , Juszkiewicz, P. J. Ethics! , Bhola, D. S. ( 2002 ). A review of strategies for validating computer-automated scoring . Applied Measurement in Education , 15, 391 – 412 . doi: 10.1207/S15324818AME1504_04 [Taylor Francis Online], [Web of sojourner truth Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) identified three broad approaches. First, much of the research on automated scoring systems has been devoted to demonstrating correlations or agreements between automated ratings and human ratings. The Importance Of Reflective! The second group of studies has investigated the relationship between AEE ratings and truth external indicators, such as teachers’ judgments of leading up to student writing skills or other test results (Coniam, 2009 Coniam, D. ( 2009 ). Experimenting with a computer essay-scoring program based on ESL student writing scripts . ReCALL , 21, 259 – 279 . doi: 10.1017/S0958344009000147 [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ; Vantage Learning, 2007 Vantage Learning. ( 2007 ). Accomplishments! MY access!® efficacy report . New Hope, PA: Vantage Learning. Retrieved from http://www.vantagelearning.com/school/research/myaccess.html [Google Scholar] ; Weigle, 2002 Weigle, S. C. ( 2002 ). Assessing writing . Cambridge, UK : Cambridge University Press . [Crossref] [Google Scholar] ). External factors that have been researched include multiple-choice tests, grades in courses dependent on writing, teachers’ ratings of student writing skills, and Essay students’ self-evaluations (Ben-Simon Bennett, 2007 Ben-Simon, B. , Bennett, R. Truth! E. ( 2007 ). Toward more substantively meaningful automated essay scoring. The Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment, 6 (1). Retrieved from the importance http://ejournals.bc.edu/ojs/index.php/jtla/article/view/1631/1475 [Google Scholar] ). The third approach has explored the scoring process and mental models used by AEE systems.

For example, one concern about AEE scoring is the weighting of length as a scoring trait because length was found to be a highly predictive feature in e-rater (Chodorow Burstein, 2004 Chodorow, M. , Burstein, J. ( 2004 ). Beyond essay length: Evaluating e-rater®’s performance on TOEFL essays (Research Report No. Truth Accomplishments! 73). Princeton, NJ : Educational Testing Service . [Google Scholar] ). In Jones’s ( 2006 Jones, E. ( 2006 ). ACCUPLACER’s essay-scoring technology: When reliability does not equal validity . Leading Ww1! In P. F. Truth Accomplishments! Ericsson , R. H. Haswell (Eds.), Machine scoring of student essays: Truth and consequences ( pp. Robert Fitting Essay! 79–92 ). Sojourner Truth! Logan, UT : Utah State University Press . [Google Scholar] ) study scored by WritePlacer Plus , ACCUPLACER’s program using IntelliMetric as its automated scoring system, 85% of the virtue variance in essay ratings was accounted for by length. 1 1 In a recent competition, ETS invited people to write essays that could trick e-rater into assigning lower or higher ratings than deserved. The winner’s technique was simply to write a paragraph and repeat it 37 times. E-rater gave this essay the highest possible score of 6 while two human raters both scored it “1,” creating the maximum discrepancy of five points between automated and human scoring (Powers, Burstein, Chodorow, Fowles, Kukich, 2002 Powers, D. E. Truth Accomplishments! , Burstein, J. C. , Chodorow, M. Sick Case Essay! , Fowles, M. E. , Kukich, K. ( 2002 ). Accomplishments! Stumping e-rater : Challenging the validity of automated essay scoring . Computers in Human Behavior , 18, 103 – 134 . Xi ( 2010 Xi, X. ( 2010 ). Automated scoring and sojourner accomplishments feedback systems: Where are we and where are we heading? Language Testing , 27, 291 – 300 . doi: 10.1177/0265532210364643 [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) developed a list of validity questions related to automated scoring, in the same way questions are asked in Harm a validity argument (as proposed by Chapelle, Enright, Jamieson, 2008 Chapelle, C. , Enright, M. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! , Jamieson, J. (Eds.). ( 2008 ). Building a validity argument for TOEFL . New York : Routledge/Taylor and Francis Group . [Google Scholar] ). These questions included underrepresentation or misrepresentation of constructs and writing tasks, validity and consistency of scoring, and whether test takers’ knowledge of the scoring algorithms would impact their writing. AEE systems and non-native student writers of English. Particularly relevant to this study is the performance of automated scoring systems on non-native (ESL and EFL) student essay responses. However, this dimension of AEE systems has received little attention (Coniam, 2009 Coniam, D. ( 2009 ). Experimenting with a computer essay-scoring program based on ESL student writing scripts . ReCALL , 21, 259 – 279 . doi: 10.1017/S0958344009000147 [Crossref], [Web of The Despairing Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ). Sojourner Accomplishments! Instead of building systems to directly target non-native English speaker responses, models for native speaker essays have been used for up to ww1, comparisons with non-native counterparts. As Warschauer and Ware ( 2006 Warschauer, M. , Ware, P. ( 2006 ). Automated writing evaluation: Defining the classroom research agenda . Truth Accomplishments! Language Teaching Research , 10, 157 – 180 . doi: 10.1191/1362168806lr190oa [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) noted, none of the pressure rates AEE systems were originally built for the EFL/ESL population, but their development gradually has accommodated the needs of sojourner accomplishments this population. This is demonstrated in the various feedback options, including first language feedback now available for speakers of Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in MY Access . Yet questions still remain whether these accommodations, well intentioned as they are, really help EFL/ESL students improve their writing skills. Weigle ( 2013 Weigle, S. ( 2013 ). English as a second language writing and automated essay evaluation . In M. D. Shermis , J. Burstein (Eds.), Handbook of automated essay evaluation ( pp. Robert Chafe's Afterimage, A Society Essay! 36–54 ). New York, NY : Routledge . Truth Accomplishments! [Google Scholar] ) also pointed out the blood pressure and pulse need for “the applicability of automated essay scoring (AES) systems to accomplishments non-native speakers (NNSs)” (p. 36). Blood Pressure And Pulse Rates! Liu and truth accomplishments Kunnan ( 2016 Liu, S. , Kunnan, A. J. ( 2016 ). Investigating the applications of automated writing evaluation to pressure rates Chinese undergraduate English majors: A case study of WritetoLearn . CALICO Journal , 33, 71 – 91 . [Google Scholar] ) found that WriteToLearn with Chinese undergraduate study participants was consistent but highly severe compared to the four trained human raters in scoring essays but, more importantly, it failed to score seven essays.

EFL teachers and independent researchers’ studies. A number of EFL researchers have recently reported results of their student writers’ reaction to MY Access and truth its instructional applications, including My Editor, MY Access ’ text analyzer and proofreading tool, and My Tutor , the writing instructional tool generating feedback. In Chen and virtue Cheng’s ( 2006 Chen, C. Sojourner! E. , Cheng, W. ( 2006 , May ). The use of computer-based writing program: Facilitation or frustration? Paper presented at Sick Leave Case Study, the 23rd International Conference on English Teaching and Learning , Republic of China . [Google Scholar] ) investigation of 68 students who reflected on their use of sojourner truth accomplishments MY Access in their writing classes, students expressed concerns about Harm, two aspects: the unfairness of MY Access ’ grading and sojourner accomplishments its inability to judge the content of essays. In addition, after the initial excitement, students started to leading up to ww1 feel the sojourner repetition and generality of the Robert Fitting Essay diagnostic feedback that they felt was not personalized enough to be useful for essay revision. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Fang’s ( 2010 Fang, Y. Sick Case Study! ( 2010 ). Perceptions of the accomplishments computer-assisted writing program among EFL college learners . Educational Technology Society , 13, 246 – 256 . [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) study focused on The Despairing Act of student perceptions about using different tools on MY Access among 45 junior college students. The students found MY Access a useful writing tool, especially its grammatical proofreading tool, My Editor , but they were not totally happy with its essay scoring system. Sojourner Truth! Students also thought MY Access helped them more with locating and revising form than content. Such results were reinforced by Dikli’s ( 2010 Dikli, S. ( 2010 ). The nature of automated essay feedback . CALICO Journal , 28, 99 – 134 . doi: 10.11139/cj.28.1.99-134 [Crossref] [Google Scholar] ) investigation into the nature of My Editor and My Tutor ’s feedback to ESL student essays. This study found significant differences between MY Access and written teacher feedback as well as students’ more positive response to the latter. The cutting edge work of AEE systems may yet be in providing diagnostic feedback to writers.

Some error detection programs have been making improvements over the last few decades to Robert Chafe's Into a Society Essay improve their specificity together with precision. Leacock and Chodorow ( 2003 Leacock, C. , Chodorow, M. ( 2003 ). Automated grammatical error detection . In M. D. Shermis , J. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Burstein (Eds.), Automated essay scoring: A cross-disciplinary perspective ( pp. 195–208 ). Mahwah, NJ : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates . [Google Scholar] ) argued that the value of error diagnosis depends on how specific and The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay informative it is. They take the position that generic responses, such as “something is accomplishments, wrong here,” are inferior to specific comments, such as “this is a subject-verb agreement error.” With the latter kind of Chafe's Afterimage, Into feedback, students are provided more cues to improve their writing. Assessment of Lexical Knowledge is truth, reported to achieve a precision level of events ww1 80% in pointing out errors.

This still means that 20% errors flagged are actually well-formed constructions (Leacock Chodorow, 2003 Leacock, C. , Chodorow, M. Sojourner! ( 2003 ). Automated grammatical error detection . In M. D. Shermis , J. Blood Pressure! Burstein (Eds.), Automated essay scoring: A cross-disciplinary perspective ( pp. 195–208 ). Mahwah, NJ : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates . [Google Scholar] ). Their study also showed that the sojourner accomplishments four most predictive error types for student essays are agreement, ill-formed modals, ill-formed infinitive clauses, and ill-formed participles. MY Access has an error feedback tool called My Editor . It detects spelling, grammar, and punctuations errors. It also diagnoses vocabulary choice and virtue examples sentential-level errors. As students click on My Editor when they work on their drafts or revise an already submitted essay, a computer screen shows the students their essays with errors.

Automated feedback can thus be used as an initial response to sojourner truth accomplishments student writing. The possible quick generation of feedback to student essays also is Robert Fitting Into a Society, better than the sojourner notoriously time-consuming nature of writing instructors giving feedback, especially in large classes. Of course, the expectation is that diagnostic feedback will help student writers, although the Sick Case written error feedback literature poses some concerns. Research in the area of written corrective feedback (WCF) has not been conclusive in what extent student writers benefit from WCF or even whether they benefit at sojourner, all (see Ferris, 1999 Ferris, D. ( 1999 ). The case for grammar correction in L2 writing classes: A response to Truscott (1996) . Journal of Second Language Writing , 8, 1 – 11 . doi: 10.1016/S1060-3743(99)80110-6 [Crossref] [Google Scholar] , 2004 Ferris, D. ( 2004 ). Does error feedback help student writers? New evidence on of reflective the short- and long-term effects of written error correction . In K. Hyland , F. Language Learning , 64, 103 – 131 . doi: 10.1111/lang.2014.64.issue-1 [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ). The picture is of reflective, further complicated because most automated error feedback is in English, with a very limited range of truth accomplishments first language options. This is in line with Dikli’s ( 2010 Dikli, S. ( 2010 ). The nature of automated essay feedback . CALICO Journal , 28, 99 – 134 . Leave Case Study Essay! doi: 10.11139/cj.28.1.99-134 [Crossref] [Google Scholar] ) findings in her study, which suggested that systems need to improve their feedback to non-native essays by giving shorter and truth less redundant feedback using simpler language and practice adding feedback for off-topic or repetitive essays. Xi ( 2010 Xi, X. ( 2010 ). Automated scoring and feedback systems: Where are we and where are we heading? Language Testing , 27, 291 – 300 . doi: 10.1177/0265532210364643 [Crossref], [Web of Science #0174;] [Google Scholar] ) developed a list of validity questions related to automated feedback: whether automated feedback system accurately identifies writers’ errors, whether it can do this consistently, and whether the feedback is meaningful, and whether the feedback results in improved writing. Liu and Kunnan ( 2016 Liu, S. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! , Kunnan, A. J. ( 2016 ). Investigating the applications of automated writing evaluation to Essay Chinese undergraduate English majors: A case study of WritetoLearn . Truth! CALICO Journal , 33, 71 – 91 . [Google Scholar] ) found in their examination of WriteToLearn’s feedback, overall precision and recall of errors were only 49% and practice 18.7% respectively.

These figures did not meet the minimum threshold of 90% precision (set by Burstein, Chodorow, Leacock, 2003 Burstein, J. Sojourner! , Chodorow, M. , Leacock, C. ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of student essays . Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] ) for it to be considered a reliable error detecting tool. Furthermore, it had difficulty in blood and pulse identifying errors in accomplishments the use of articles, prepositions, word choice, and expression. On the basis of the issues raised in automated scoring and blood pressure diagnostic feedback, we decided to examine the following research questions. What do the agreement and strength of the relationship between human ratings and sojourner accomplishments MY Access ’ scores reveal about MY Access ’ rating? How does MY Access address content as a scoring trait? How does it treat off-topic essays? How accurate is events up to ww1, My Editor ’s feedback when compared to that of sojourner accomplishments writing instructors?

Data were collected from Fitting Into a total of 114 EFL and ESL student writers. The participants contributed 147 essays from three prompts, 105 essays based on two prompts from the list of 90 preloaded prompts on MY Access! Home Edition and 42 essays based on one end-of-term essay prompt that was not a pre-loaded prompt. The sample included 97 Vietnamese EFL students and 17 ESL students in the United States. The Vietnamese EFL students were either second- or third-year English majors at a university in central Vietnam pursuing a 4-year BA program. Sojourner Truth! The 17 ESL students were level four and five (intermediate to blood pressure rates advanced) students in an Intensive English Program (IEP) at a State University in California. The large majority of sojourner these ESL students were Asian, with Chinese as the biggest group.

Three prompts were used in all. Two prompts from MY Access were selected from a list of 90 pre-loaded prompts based on their genres: one informative and one argumentative. Prompt 1 was titled What have you learned? Prompt 2 was titled Internet classrooms vs. Traditional classrooms . The third writing prompt was not on the list of 90 pre-loaded topics on MY Access . It was an end-of-term exam prompt administered at events leading, the university in Vietnam. Prompt 3 was titled Milestones . Prompts 1 and 2 as they appeared on MY Access are presented in truth Appendix A and Prompt 3 is presented in Appendix B. Experimental prompts used by the researcher. A total of Harm 42 end-of-term exam essays were submitted to accomplishments three different MY Access prompts, two of which were pre-loaded topics on MY Access (one persuasive “Challenges of Parenthood” and one informative “Power sources in the Year 2050”) serving as “false” prompts for these essays, and the other was the teacher-created prompt (the real topic). The researcher used the practice teacher-created topic function on MY Access to add the following end-of-term exam prompt: “What are the sojourner truth important milestones in a person’s life in your culture?

Give the reasons why they are important.” These essays submitted to this newly created prompt in the system produced a set of 42 scores. Afterward, these essays were submitted to up to the two false prompts, called the first and second experimental prompts. These experimental prompts and the teacher-created topic are presented in accomplishments Appendix B. The two essay prompts from Chafe's a Society Essay MY Access were administered as either homework practice or in-class essays, depending on the genres each class was working on sojourner in their curriculum and their class schedules. More specifically, the homework essays were keyed in by the student writers and sent to the teachers in the Word file, which were then forwarded to the researcher. The in-class essays were handwritten and submitted to the teachers. Afterward, these essays were typed up and double-checked for fidelity to the original handwritten versions. The third group of essays written to the teacher-created prompt included student essays written in a 90-minute exam for the previous semester. The variation in essay writing conditions among the the importance of reflective participants does not interfere with the results of the study because MY Access is sojourner, designed to facilitate self-conducted writing practice, and timing or the resources students get access to while writing are all acceptable, as long as the final essays are typed in and submitted online to virtue examples the system. The scoring of the 105 essays written to the two prompts from MY Access was based on a holistic rubric posted on MY Access website (see Appendix C). Truth! The rubric used was a 1–6 scoring scale with five major traits of Sick Leave Essay writing: Focus and Meaning, Content and Development, Organization, Language Use and Style, Mechanics and Conventions.

Corresponding to each score point was a brief description of each trait. For example, to achieve a “6,” an essay establishes and maintains “an insightful controlling or central idea and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the purpose and audience [in terms of sojourner truth accomplishments Focus and Act of Self Harm Essay Meaning]” or “contains little or no errors in paragraphing, grammar and usage, punctuation, spelling, and truth accomplishments mechanics [in terms of Mechanics and Conventions].” On the other hand, “1” indicated an Study essay that inadequately communicated the writer’s message and failed to support ideas with details and/or examples (in Content and Development). After the essays were put together, coded, and printed out, they were sent to two human raters for scoring. The raters were both non-native EFL instructors with MA degrees in TESOL with about sojourner accomplishments, 5 years of virtue teaching experience at sojourner accomplishments, the tertiary level in The Despairing Act of Self Harm Vietnam. Prior to the actual scoring, the raters worked together to truth clarify the guidelines of the holistic scoring rubric posted on MY Access . Leading Up To! They also went through some essays that had been rated by MY Access to get an overview of sojourner truth how Intellimetric rated these essays based on the set of criteria in the rubric.

After that, the raters piloted their ratings on a small set of four essays and virtue ethics examples analyzed the differences in their ratings to accomplishments resolve any problems regarding their interpretation of the rubric. The scoring rubrics were examined to see if there were high agreements between human ratings and MY Access ratings. Double ratings from virtue two trained EFL teachers were obtained and sojourner accomplishments averaged for the set of essays written to the two prompts on MY Access . An inter-rater agreement analysis (exact, adjacent, and discrepant) and correlation analyses were conducted. In addition, the effects of prompts and raters on ratings and of reflective the effect of essay length on ratings were examined by using ANOVA. Forty-two essays written for sojourner truth accomplishments, the end-of-term exam were collected. Because these essays were written to a topic other than the 90 ones pre-loaded on MY Access , they provided a tool to reveal the Robert Essay way IntelliMetric deals with content in assigning ratings. Sojourner Truth! Pearson correlations were calculated between the ratings these essays received when they were submitted to the real topic (using the Self Essay teacher-created function on MY Access ) and the ratings MY Access generated as these same essays were submitted to the two experimental (or false) topics on the system. In addition, with the help of the corpus-based vocabulary tool Compleat Lexical Tutor (Lextutor at http://www.lextutor.ca/), which uses the one-million-word Brown corpus, quantitative statistics were generated for word frequencies and keywords used in the texts created from the essays. Truth Accomplishments! This analysis provided clues regarding how MY Access dealt with off-topic essays by examining data from the Self content analysis of the accomplishments 42 end-of-term essays. Two theoretical concepts termed precision and recall were examined for this question.

Specifically, precision is the number of cases in Afterimage, Essay which My Editor and the human annotator agree are errors divided by the total number of cases that My Editor flags as errors (Burstein et al ., 2003 Burstein, J. , Chodorow, M. , Leacock, C. ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of student essays . Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] ). Recall is the number of cases correctly identified by My Editor (the hits) divided by sojourner accomplishments, the total human annotator-flagged cases. That is, the number of My Editor ’s hits divided by the total of hits and misses (i.e., cases identified by the human annotator but overlooked by My Editor ). In this analysis, 15 essays were randomly selected from the sample. The first EFL teacher annotated errors using the same system of error tags adopted by My Editor . Error tagging was based on four major trait feedback categories: grammar, usage, mechanics, and style. Only the first three traits were focused on. The trait of style was intentionally left out of this analysis because it constitutes an pressure and pulse rates ambiguous aspect of writing (Burstein et al ., 2003 Burstein, J. , Chodorow, M. , Leacock, C. ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of student essays . Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] ). For the purpose of sojourner truth this basically quantitative analysis, judgments about Sick Essay, good or bad writing style may be too subjective to be suitable. Errors identified were tallied for the calculation of precision and recall . Before the actual coding of errors took place, the human annotator underwent a self-training process to familiarize herself with MY Access ’ error tagging system.

She submitted 10 essays from the collected data (other than the sojourner truth accomplishments 15 essays in the subsample) to MY Access to have a thorough look at the feedback generated by My Editor . Through this, a list of error tags were noted down, including 16 categories: spelling, capitalisation, article, preposition, run-on sentence, fragment, consistency, contraction, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, word form, mass and count nouns, wrong word choice, confused word, comparative, and Sick Leave Case superlative. The actual error annotation was done with constant reference to reliable sources of grammar and English language use, some of which include Raymond Murphy’s ( 1994 Murphy, R. ( 1994 ). English grammar in use: A self-study reference and sojourner practice book for intermediate students ( 2nd ed .). Cambridge, UK : Cambridge University Press . [Google Scholar] ) English Grammar in Use , Michael Swan’s ( 2005 Swan, M. ( 2005 ). The Despairing Self Essay! Practical English usage ( 3rd ed .). Oxford, UK : Oxford University Press [Google Scholar] ) Practical English Usage , and John Eastwood’s ( 1999 Eastwood, J. ( 1999 ). Oxford practice grammar ( 2nd ed .). Oxford, UK : Oxford University Press . [Google Scholar] ) Oxford Practice Grammar . Research question 1: MY Access ’s rubrics for scoring essays. Descriptive statistics of human ratings and sojourner truth accomplishments MY Access ratings. Descriptive statistics for the three sets of ratings by the importance of reflective, human Ratings 1 and 2 and MY Access are shown in Table 1. The results show very similar mean ratings from the two human raters, while MY Access appears to be more generous. Automated Essay Evaluation for English Language Learners:A Case Study of MY Access. Table 1. Descriptives ( N = 105). In general, ratings from the two human raters, their averaged ratings, and MY Access ratings met the necessary assumptions regarding normal distribution, linearity, and range on sojourner accomplishments the 1–6 scale.

Therefore, correlations, ANOVA, and simple linear regression could be calculated. Table 2 reports the events leading ww1 exact and adjacent agreement percentages (Attali Burstein, 2006 Attali, Y. , Burstein, J. Accomplishments! ( 2006 ). Automated essay scoring with e-rater® v.2 . Beyond essay length: Evaluating e-rater®’s performance on TOEFL essays (Research Report No. 73). Princeton, NJ : Educational Testing Service . [Google Scholar] ) between the two human ratings and between the averaged human ratings with MY Access ratings. Generally, there was better agreement between the two human ratings than their agreement with MY Access . An exact plus adjacent agreement statistic of 71.4% and a disparate statistic of 28.6 % between human and MY Access scoring are not very convincing results.

Automated Essay Evaluation for sojourner truth, English Language Learners:A Case Study of MY Access. Table 2. Human inter-rater and rater- MY Access agreement ( N = 105). Correlations between human ratings and MY Access’s scoring. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the two human ratings and between the human ratings and MY Access ratings. The Despairing Act Of Harm Essay! Table 3 shows a fairly strong correlation between Human Rater 1 and Rater 2 ( r = .783, p .05), but the sojourner truth accomplishments correlations between Human Rater 1 and Study Essay MY Access ( r = .672, p .05) and Human Rater 2 and MY Access ( r = .629, p .05) were both moderate. Furthermore, correlation between Averaged human Rater 1 and Rater 2 ratings and MY Access ’ ratings was also moderate ( r = .688, p .05).

Automated Essay Evaluation for English Language Learners:A Case Study of MY Access. Table 3. Correlations between two human ratings and MY Access ratings. Difference between human ratings’ average and MY Access ratings. A paired-samples t- test was computed to compare the accomplishments means of Leave Study Essay human ratings’ average and MY Access ratings. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! The mean of the averaged human ratings’ was 3.76 (SD = 1.18), and the mean of MY Access ratings was 4.09 (SD = 1.19).

The t -test showed that there is a statistically significant mean difference between the human ratings and MY Access : ( t (104) = ?3.538, p .05). The effects of prompts and raters on ratings. A 2 ? 3 mixed-design ANOVA was calculated to examine the effects of the prompts (Prompt 1 and ww1 Prompt 2) and ratings (Rater 1, Rater 2, and MY Access ) on ratings. The dependent variables (Rater 1, Rater 2, and MY Access ratings) in the ANOVA test met the assumptions of being normally distributed and measured on an interval scale. Sojourner Truth! The main effect for rater ( F (2,103) = 7.516, p .01) and the main effect for prompt ( F (1,103) = 18.912, p .01) were statistically significant but the prompt x rater interaction ( F (2,206) = 1.259, p .01) was not significant. Essay length as a predictive feature. A simple linear regression was calculated predicting essay ratings assigned by both human raters and MY Access based on essay length (i.e., the number of words in each essay). Pressure And Pulse Rates! A significant regression was found ( F (1,103) = 118.002, p .05) with an sojourner truth accomplishments R 2 of .534.

The predicted score of an Chafe's Afterimage, Fitting Into a Society Essay essay (assigned by the human raters) is equal to sojourner truth 1.302 + .008 (length) points when length is measured in blood pressure and pulse rates number of words. Sojourner Accomplishments! Essay ratings increased .008 point for each extra word. A simple linear regression was then calculated predicting MY Access ratings based on essay length. A significant regression was found ( F (1,103) = 116.719, p .05), with an R 2 of .531. The predicted score of an essay (assigned by MY Access ) is equal to 1.610 + .008 (length) points when length is measured in number of words. Essay ratings increased .008 point for each extra word. Pressure And Pulse! As can be seen in the results above, about 53% of the variance in both the averaged human ratings and MY Access ratings could be accounted for sojourner accomplishments, by essay length. Therefore, length was found to examples be an equally strong predictor of the ratings assigned by both MY Access and the human raters. Research question 2: Content in MY Access ’s scoring models. Descriptive statistics of the three sets of ratings submitted to three MY Access prompts.

As shown in Table 4, the mean score of the 42 essays was highest when they were submitted to the teacher-created prompt. This set of score is termed the real score, followed by the mean score as the accomplishments same essays were submitted to Sick Study the first experimental prompt, then to the second experimental prompt. Informed by prior research on other automated scoring programs and sojourner truth a strong feeling that essays written to teacher-created topics on MY Access cannot be “comprehended” by the system, the researcher played a trick to confirm her doubts. Forty-two essays were submitted to three different prompts in MY Access and the results are presented here. Experimental topic 1: Challenges of Study Essay parenthood.

When the essays answering the teacher-created topic on sojourner accomplishments “Important milestones in your culture” were submitted to the first experimental prompt “The challenges of (teenage) parenthood,” only 11 essays (26%) were flagged as off-topic while 27 received the feedback “great job”; the remaining four were given “1 s” due to “major syntax problems” (“great job” and “major syntax probems” are generic diagnostic feedback phrases used by Sick Leave Study Essay, MY Access to describe essays earning high overall score and those having poor grammar use, respectively). When the two prompts were compared, the real topic and truth the first experimental one, there was possible overlapping content in student essay responses. An examination of the 42 essays showed that 24 essays mentioned “becoming a parent” or at least “becoming a parent after getting married” as one of the Chafe's Afterimage, most important milestones in their culture. Furthermore, most of the essays frequently referred to words like grandparents, parents, adulthood/adult, married , and teenage/teenager . Below is the list of word frequency derived from the submission of all the sojourner truth accomplishments essays (making a 15580-word text) to the corpus-based Compleat Lexical Tutor ( Lextutor ) that counts words in texts and lists their keywords based on the obtained word frequencies. It then compares these keywords, which are the words in the texts that are far more frequent, proportionally, than they are in ethics examples a general reference corpus. Lextutor uses the Brown corpus, whose one million words comprise 500 texts of truth 2000 words on a broad range of topics.

Figure 2 lists the 30 most frequent words for this 15580-word text, with those most likely to appear frequently in essays written to the first experimental prompt in bold. To interpret the number preceding each word listed in Figure 1 and 2, it is instructive to consider the Chafe's a Society explanation cited from Lextutor : The number accompanying each word represents the number of times more frequent the sojourner accomplishments word is in your text than it is in the Brown corpus. Ethics Examples! For example, the first item in the output 1364.00 milestone is calculated on the basis that milestone has 4 natural occurrences in the Brown’s 1 million words, but 85 occurrences in your 15580-word text. These 85 occurrences are proportionally a lot more than the 4 occurrences in the Brown. Sojourner! Taken as a proportion of 1,000,000 words, these 85 occurrences represent 85/15580 ? 1,000,000 = 5456 virtual occurrences.

These 5456 occurrences are 1364.00 times more numerous than the 4 occurrences in Brown. Most frequently used words in the combined text of 11 off-topic essays. Judging from the corpus comparison and the possible overlapping content areas between these two prompts, MY Access ’s failure to recognize the truth accomplishments off-topicness of 31 of the Leave Case 42 essays seems predictable. The 11 essays flagged as off-topic were then put together in a subtext of 3,969 words and submitted to Lextutor for the frequency list. Again, the sojourner 30 most frequent words in this subtext are shown in Figure 2. Leading! What can be seen from the sojourner accomplishments comparison of the Leave Essay two lists is that words more relevant to the expected content area of sojourner accomplishments becoming parents during the teenage years have disappeared, including babies, grandparents, spouse, parents, eighteen , and happiness . Table 5 presents a few of the mismatches between human ratings and MY Access ratings for off-topic essays. The ratings assigned by MY Access are much higher for all off-topic essays.

Descriptives of ratings for Robert Chafe's Afterimage, Fitting Into, same submissions to sojourner accomplishments three MY Access prompts ( N = 42). Automated Essay Evaluation for English Language Learners:A Case Study of MY Access. Table 5. Mismatched ratings of blood off-topic essays. Experimental topic 2: Power sources in the year 2050. When the same set of essays was submitted to sojourner truth the second experimental prompt about Case Study, “Power sources in the Year 2050,” a totally irrelevant focus compared to the real topic, 40 essays were flagged as “off-topic”; only sojourner, two received 1 s due to “major syntax problems.” In contrast, none of the submissions to the teacher-created (real) topic “Important milestones in your culture” was flagged as “off-topic,” with 36 receiving “great job,” and the importance of reflective practice six given 1 s due to sojourner “major syntax problems.”

My Editor ’s error feedback: Accuracy. Table 6 presents precision and recall measures of the human annotator and My Editor ’s error feedback. Automated Essay Evaluation for The Despairing Act of Self, English Language Learners:A Case Study of MY Access. Table 6. Human annotator and My Editor ’s error feedback results. In this subsample of 15 essays, students made far more mistakes with articles (124 errors) than with any other error type. Accomplishments! Punctuations and run-on sentences were next on the list.

Subject-verb agreement was the fourth problematic area that needed attention. The number of the errors found in each of the Act of Essay other types ranged from 0 to 36. Of the total number of errors in each error type identified by sojourner, the human annotator, My Editor demonstrated quite an uneven performance. My Editor was most precise in the importance its identification of open or closed spelling errors, although in sojourner this subsample, it corrected only two cases ( part time to part-time and everyday to every day ), both of which matched the human annotator. However, the events leading up to ww1 system also missed a lot of open/closed spelling cases that needed corrections with the recall of only sojourner truth accomplishments, 28.6%, which means it missed 71.4% of the total human-flagged cases. My Editor also did well with article errors, with the precision of 96.9%. However, similar to Act of Self Harm open/closed spelling errors, the system missed 75% errors of this type the human annotator identified.

Capitalization and run-on sentences were the two error types that showed a similar pattern in My Editor ’s performance: a precision of around 80% accompanied by the missing level of about 50% of sojourner truth all the cases flagged by the human annotator. Spelling and consistency, which combined the two subtypes of Robert Chafe's Afterimage, a Society Essay verb group consistency and noun phrase consistency errors, exhibited the smallest number of accomplishments cases overlooked by My Editor with recall values of 76.9 and Case 70.2, respectively. Of all the cases tagged by sojourner truth, My Editor in these two types, around 80% were precise diagnoses. In addition, My Editor failed to read the essays at the sentence and discourse level. It was least precise with its diagnosis of confused words errors with precision of only 28.6% and recall of 11.1%. The Importance! This means that of all errors in this category flagged by My Editor , only sojourner truth, 28.6% were really errors; the the importance rest were false positives.

It also missed almost 89% cases of this type compared to the human annotator. Overall, My Editor was 73% precise in flagging errors of the 16 error types designated for this analysis and covered 39.6% of all the errors the human annotator flagged. Sojourner! In other words, it missed 60.4% errors that should be attended to according to the human judgment. Researchers on error feedback tools maintain that they would choose to err on the side of precision over Self recall (Burstein et al ., 2003 Burstein, J. , Chodorow, M. , Leacock, C. ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of accomplishments student essays . Events Leading Up To! ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of ww1 student essays . Truth! Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] , p. 6). In studying Criterion , Burstein et al . ( 2003 Burstein, J. , Chodorow, M. Robert Chafe's Afterimage, Into A Society! , Leacock, C. ( 2003 ). Sojourner! Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for automated evaluation of blood and pulse student essays . Proceedings of the sojourner truth accomplishments 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of events Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] ) set the truth minimum threshold of 90% precision for the tool to be useful for students. If My Editor is judged by these criteria, it falls short. My Editor ’s feedback offers suggestions for possible errors rather than dictating corrections to pressure and pulse the writers.

Students can click on sojourner truth accomplishments any error tagged by My Editor , and a smaller screen pops up to explain the problem. After the brief diagnosis, there are some suggestions that students can choose from. The screen also demonstrates the rule that explains more generally how My Editor identifies and events ww1 deals with that error type (e.g., spelling, preposition, etc.). Truth! General examples and ways to The Despairing Harm correct the errors in the examples are also provided. With this diagnosis-suggestions-example-rule approach, students can learn to sojourner truth judge for themselves if they have really made a mistake and choose among the given correction options. However, certain gaps in MY Editor ’s feedback can be addressed to better accommodate the ESL/EFL learners’ needs. What was noticeable about My Editor ’s feedback about examples, noun phrase consistency was its double flagging of the same errors: It is sojourner truth accomplishments, sure that there are many Mass vs. count errors conflict Noun phrase consistency errors. The word conflict in the above sentence should agree in number with its plural determiner many . Therefore, labeling it as noun phrase consistency (implying inconsistent number agreement) is the best way to draw the student’s attention to virtue ethics his/her mistake.

However, the first label mass vs. count errors on accomplishments the same word suggesting “if the sentence requires a singular noun, consider [much] or [many a] instead of pressure and pulse rates ‘many’” goes against sojourner, the second suggestion of The Despairing Harm consistency. Such conflicting comments can confuse the student who may think that they need to fix two errors. Double flagging also occurred among Subject-Verb Agreement errors. Sojourner Accomplishments! For example, in the next sentence, “Argument Subject-verb agreement errors take Subject-verb agreement errors place,” it is suggested that argument be changed to Sick Leave Case Study arguments to agree with the plural verb form take , while in the second place, it is suggested that take (which should be grammatically correct now after the change of the subject noun) be changed to takes to agree with the original subject noun argument . Along with articles, the English tense-aspect system is problematic for EFL learners, especially those from truth accomplishments Asian first language backgrounds. The Despairing Self Harm! Yet My Editor does not seem to be programmed to sojourner truth deal with tense and aspect errors, except for its two rare attempts at diagnosing cases related to Self Harm Essay tense errors, both of which failed.

The first one was a false positive where the system traced back to the preposition at in the phrase at childhood and truth accomplishments assumed that at refers to the past. It thus suggested the virtue ethics examples inappropriate use of could have become . Truth Accomplishments! Here is MY Access ’s annotation. At childhood, we are taught carefully by The Despairing Act of Essay, parents, teachers. We are take Verb group consistency errors care of or bring up carefully from many peoples around. That is a good environment so that The child can become Incorrect use of past tense a good person at first life.

The second attempt successfully located the error and offered a usable suggestion, but its flagging term was misleading for the student as this error is not about tense: Besides, students haven’t Verb tense, instead of ‘have not’, consider using the more standard [do not have] to pay for buying books, textbooks are in the Internet too. Except for truth, these two cases, nowhere else in pressure rates all the essays could feedback be found about inconsistent or wrong tense usage. In essay ESL2-14, the use of tenses was a major issue, but MY Access overlooked them. Sojourner Truth! The adverbial phrase in the past is clear evidence of past tense.

My Editor did not identify the error. In the Robert Afterimage, a Society past, all the students have to take the traditional classroom. Many students sit in the classroom. There is sojourner truth, blackboard Missing articles, computer, desks and chairs. The Despairing Act Of! All the students take the class in sojourner truth accomplishments the classroom like that . (From Essay ESL2-14) These gaps in virtue My Editor ’s feedback can be attributed to its inability to handle information across sentences at the discourse level. As long as words or phrases were grammatically correct, meaning and content were ignored. In the first research question, the exact plus adjacent agreement between human ratings and MY Access were moderate (71.4%) and the correlations between human ratings and MY Access were also moderate (r = .688). But the difference between the averaged human rater score and MY Access was found to be statistically significant. These findings do not provide adequate support for any implicit claims of truth MY Access that it can score essays like human raters.

In addition, a feature shared by human and automated scoring is that 53% of the variance in both ratings could be accounted for by the length of the of reflective essays. Overall, the agreement and correlational findings in this study were not very different from sojourner accomplishments those found in earlier studies of e-rater and Self Harm Essay IEA systems. But Vantage Learning’s ( MY Access’s developer) findings of .93 correlation and 76% exact agreement and 99% for truth, adjacent agreement were not found in the importance this study. Thus, the high agreements and correlation indices found in studies conducted by MY Access developers (Attali Burstein, 2006 Attali, Y. , Burstein, J. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! ( 2006 ). Automated essay scoring with e-rater® v.2 . Journal of Technology, Learning, and Assessment , 4(3). Of Reflective! J. ( 2016 ). Investigating the applications of automated writing evaluation to Chinese undergraduate English majors: A case study of WritetoLearn . CALICO Journal , 33, 71 – 91 . Harm! [Google Scholar] ) could not be confirmed. In the second research question of sojourner accomplishments how MY Access dealt with content, the Robert Chafe's Afterimage, Fitting Into a Society results show that My Access scores off-topic essays more generously because it is unable to systematically flag the essays as off-topic. It is obvious MY Access “read” the essays in mathematical models of sojourner truth accomplishments syntax, lexis, mechanics, and discourse.

This is a real problem because the ability to identify off-topic essays is a capability that trained human raters are expected to have and any AEE system that is developed to either supplement or replace human raters must have. With cutting-edge developments in the field of computational linguistics and corpus linguistics, it is hoped that off-topic essays can be identified in the future in the same way human readers can by reading and judging essays for Sick Leave, their overall meaning and other features, such as persuasiveness and voice. The third research question examined MY Access ’s automated feedback in accuracy and potential gaps compared to human annotators of errors in the essays. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! Its instructional tool, called My Editor , is uneven in its ability to detect errors correctly and provide appropriate corrective feedback. Specifically, its accuracy in many grammatical areas is low and uneven. Furthermore, its standard as a useful error feedback tool is too low by the 90% standard set up by researchers such as Burstein et al . ( 2003 Burstein, J. , Chodorow, M. , Leacock, C. Study Essay! ( 2003 ). Criterion online essay evaluation: An application for truth, automated evaluation of The Despairing Act of Essay student essays . Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence , Acapulco, Mexico . [Google Scholar] ). My Editor ’s plausible four-step sequence (clarification-suggestions-example-rule) in generating error feedback is sojourner truth accomplishments, supposed to The Despairing Act of Harm Essay turn errors into learning opportunities not only by scaffolding students’ judgments about possible errors in their essays but also by providing them with linguistic knowledge as they work their way through the feedback. However, this approach presents two possible problems. First, the metalanguage used to describe the sojourner truth errors, offer suggestions, and state the rules may challenge ESL/EFL students’ comprehension due to of reflective their limited knowledge of the sojourner truth accomplishments target language. Up To Ww1! Second, such an approach does not discriminate between error types.

For example, the sojourner truth way article errors are dealt with should not be identical to the way spelling errors are treated. While the former constitutes a highly problematic area for EFL/ESL students and thus cannot be simply pointed out without clarification, the latter is usually straightforward and only needs flagging for students to easily correct themselves. Thus, the meaningfulness of error feedback has to Afterimage, a Society Essay be addressed in AEE systems. Furthermore, prioritization of errors is necessary in the feedback system (e.g., syntactic errors vs. usage errors vs. discourse coherence errors); this prioritization needs to match the truth accomplishments priorities of writing for a particular purpose and Study Essay proficiency level. We conducted this study from the perspective of EFL writing instruction. The findings of the study point to two practical implications for EFL teachers who may use AEE. First, the diagnostic feedback MY Access generated was not individualized, simple, and accurate enough for home tutoring purposes, although it would serve as a good companion to writing instructors to offer instant and intial diagnostic feedback.

At the same time, as Whithaus ( 2006 Whithaus, C. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! ( 2006 ). American Dreams: Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis. If only there were a Republican on the ticket who could combine the pro-business boosterism of Mitt Romney: “What we need first, last, and all the time is a good, sound business administration!” with the prideful anti-elitism of Rick Santorum: “Irresponsible teachers and professors are the worst [menace to sound government], and I am ashamed to say that several of them are on the faculty of our great State University!” and the union-busting zeal of Newt Gingrich: “There oughtn’t to be any unions allowed at all; and as it’s the sojourner truth accomplishments best way of fighting the unions, every business man ought to virtue examples, belong to an employers’-association and to the Chamber of sojourner truth, Commerce.” If only Afterimage, Fitting, we had a man like George F. Babbitt! Such a man does exist of truth, course, but only in the pages of the 1922 novel by America’s first Nobel Laureate, Sinclair Lewis. Though Babbitt turns ninety this year, Georgie Babbitt still lives and breathes and harrumphs. It’s impossible this primary season to read a newspaper or turn on the television without hearing the Act of Self echo of sojourner, his voice. Babbitt is the original American everyman. By day he is “busier than a bird-dog, not wasting a lot of good time in day-dreaming or going to Sick Leave Case Study Essay, sassiety teas or kicking about things that are none of his business, but putting the zip into some store or profession or art.” Afternoons “he mows the lawn, or sneaks in some practice putting” and after a terse dinner with wife and kids, he goes to bed, “conscience clear, having contributed his mite to the prosperity of the city and to his own bank-account.” There are lonely moments when, in sojourner truth the middle of the night, he is virtue examples visited by a mysterious fairy child who promises to truth accomplishments, whisk him away to foreign worlds “more romantic than scarlet pagodas by a silver sea”—but upon Chafe's Fitting a Society, awaking he brusquely wipes such alarming images out of his head and consoles himself with thoughts of carburetors and electric cigar lighters. A real estate agent in sojourner the fictional Midwestern city of Zenith, population 361,000 (“or practically 362,000”), Babbitt is obsessed with his standing in the community, and Zenith’s standing in Robert Afterimage, Into a Society Essay the world. He takes beaming satisfaction from his association with prominent local figures—like the newspaper poet, T. Cholmondeley “Chum” Frink—and joins every civic association that will accept him: the State Association of Real Estate Boards, the accomplishments Rotary Club, the Brotherly and Protective Order of Elks, the of reflective Outing Golf and Country Club, the Athletic Club (which is neither athletic nor a club), and, most triumphantly of all, the Zenith Boosters’ Club.

He is not a member of the Anti-Birth-Control Union, but his priest is. The Presbyterian Church determines his religious beliefs, while the senators who control the Republican Party decide what he should think about war, taxes, and the state of the economy. The large national advertisers fix what he believes to be his individuality: “Toothpastes, socks, tires, cameras, instantaneous hot-water heaters were his symbols and proofs of accomplishments, excellence; at first the signs, then the substitutes, for joy and passion and wisdom.” Lewis’s novel is remembered more for its wisdom than its passion. But its wisdom hasn’t always worn well. Thomas Frank, in the importance of reflective practice his excellent 1997 Baffler essay “Babbitt Rex,” called the accomplishments novel “a strangely limited satire—easy, even for those who inhabit the same social and regional place as George F. Leave Case! Babbitt, to regard as a document strictly of its time.” Frank’s point is that the satire is harmless, itself a form of Babbittry. After all, even good old Uncle George himself has a crisis of faith, and flirts with political moderation and rebellious thoughts before returning to his old chums in the Good Citizens’ League. The novel’s enthusiastic reception in 1922 would seem to support this point. An astonishing 1.6 million copies were sold, many to the same small-town businessmen that Lewis so bitterly lampooned. “Babbitt” and “babbittry” became common nouns. Truth Accomplishments! (Much like the term “Main Street,” taken from the title of The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay, Lewis’s previous novel; hardly a political speech passes today without its unironic invocation.) Various Midwestern cities claimed to be the real Zenith, and countless citizens declared that they were the real George F. Babbitt. They were in on the joke. But perhaps there was more to it than a joke. The most startling thing about sojourner truth accomplishments, Babbitt today is not its satire but the haunting, if brief, moments of introspection.

In one scene Babbitt, with a sudden hideous glimmer, becomes conscious of his own mortality. His way of life, he realizes, is blood incredibly mechanical—a mechanical job, mechanical relationships, mechanical conversations, and sojourner a mechanical religion, “as inhumanly respectable as a top-hat.” What, Babbitt wonders in another quiet moment, is it all about? What does he want? “Wealth? Social position? Travel? Servants? Yes, but only incidentally.” In these moments, and in others when he begins to become horrified by his marriage, dulled by years of inanition, it’s possible to make out the primordial shape of The Despairing Act of Harm Essay, novels that would come decades later—novels like Evan S. Connell’s Mrs. Truth! Bridge and Mr. Bridge , Sloan Wilson’s The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit , and most everything by Richard Yates. The moments of despair in virtue ethics Babbitt are startling because so much of the novel, unlike its successors, is a comedy, played for truth accomplishments laughs.

Some of the practice laughs, however, catch in the throat. In the novel’s final act, Babbitt tries to escape his fate. He takes a mistress, the terribly sophisticated window Tanis Judique, and attends wild alcoholic dance parties (this was the Prohibition era). He develops treasonous opinions. He defends striking workers, questions the sanctity of the Presbyterian Church, and has the temerity to accomplishments, speak up, in virtue examples the company of his fellow Boosters, for the plight of truth, foreign immigrants. (“Gosh,” says Babbitt, “they aren’t all ignorant, and I got a hunch we’re all descended from virtue ethics examples immigrants ourselves.”) But his timid foray into critical thinking brings swift and severe punishment. A whisper campaign begins, and soon Babbitt finds himself blacklisted from Zenith society. He loses business contracts and can’t show his face at the Athletic Club. Babbitt is cornered in his office, threatened, and ostracized; his friends turn into menacing henchmen. Terrified, he at last returns, with relief, to mindlessness. Lewis would pursue this theme explicitly in It Can’t Happen Here , his 1935 novel about an America succumbing to a populist dictator, but already in Babbitt his message was plain.

A democracy that demands “a wholesome sameness of thought, dress, painting, morals, and vocabulary” is no democracy, and that is sojourner no joke. Other notable novels published in 1922 : The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald Gargoyles by Ben Hecht Gentle Julia by Booth Tarkington Hungry Hearts by virtue Anzia Yezierska Glimpses of the Moon by Edith Wharton. Sojourner Truth Accomplishments! The goal is to create a literary anatomy of the sojourner truth last century—or, to be precise, from The Despairing Act of Self 1900 to 2012. In each column I’ll write about a single novel and the year it was published. The novel may not be the bestselling book of the year, the most praised, or the most highly awarded—though awards do have a way of sojourner truth accomplishments, fixing an age’s conventional wisdom in aspic. Self Harm Essay! The idea is to choose a novel that, looking back from a safe distance, seems most accurately, and eloquently, to speak for the time in which it was written. Other than that there are few rules. I won’t pick any stinkers .
